This Privacy Policy explains how ACT LIKE US (“we,” “us,” or “our”) collects, uses, and protects your personal information when you visit actlikeus.com (the “Site”) or buy Act Like Us. Think Like Them. by Daniel Freeman. We collect only what we need to fulfill your order, answer your questions, and run the Site.

1. Information we collect

Information you give us

  • Orders: your name, email address, phone number, billing and shipping addresses, the products you buy, and order notes.
  • Payment: card or wallet details are entered directly with Stripe. We receive only a confirmation and limited details, such as card type and last four digits.
  • Accounts: your username, password, and order history, if you create an account.
  • Messages: your first name, last name, email, subject, and message when you use our contact form or email us.
  • Reviews: your name, email, rating, and review text when you review the book.
  • Updates: your email address, if you choose to sign up for news about the book or events.

Information collected automatically

When you visit the Site, we and our service providers automatically collect your IP address, browser and device type, pages viewed, referring website, and the date and time of your visit. Much of this comes from cookies (see section 5).

Information from others

Our payment processor, digital delivery provider, and shipping carriers send us information such as payment status, download access, and delivery updates.

2. How we use your information

We use your information to:

  • process and deliver your orders, including shipping hardcovers and giving you access to digital and audio files;
  • send order confirmations, receipts, download links, and shipping updates;
  • answer your questions and requests, including press and speaking inquiries;
  • manage your account and display your reviews;
  • send updates about the book or events, if you opted in;
  • keep the Site secure and prevent fraud;
  • understand how visitors use the Site so we can improve it; and
  • meet our legal, tax, and accounting obligations.

3. How we share your information

We share personal information only with:

  • Service providers who help us run the store, including our web host, Stripe (payments), BookFunnel (audiobook delivery), WooCommerce Tax by Automattic (sales tax calculation), shipping carriers, and email services. They may use your information only to provide services to us.
  • Analytics and advertising partners: we do not currently use third-party analytics or advertising tools. If we add any, we will update this policy.
  • Legal authorities, when required by law or to protect our rights, our customers, or the public.
  • A buyer or successor, if our business or the book’s rights are sold or transferred.

We do not sell your personal information for money.

4. Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information

Some state laws, including California’s, treat letting advertising partners collect data through cookies on our Site as a “sale” or “sharing” of personal information for targeted advertising. You have the right to opt out of this.

To opt out:

  • email actlikeusbook@gmail.com with the subject “Do Not Sell or Share”; or
  • turn on the Global Privacy Control (GPC) in your browser. We treat a GPC signal as a valid opt-out request for that browser.

We do not knowingly sell or share the personal information of anyone under 16.

5. Cookies and similar technologies

Cookies are small files stored in your browser. We use:

  • Essential cookies that keep your cart, run checkout, and keep you logged in. The Site does not work properly without them.
  • Order attribution cookies set by our store software (WooCommerce) that record how you arrived at the Site, such as the referring website or campaign, so we can see which channels lead to orders.
  • Advertising cookies: we do not currently use advertising cookies.

You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Blocking essential cookies may stop the cart and checkout from working.

6. Your privacy rights

Depending on your state, including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, Texas, Oregon and others with consumer privacy laws, you may have the right to:

  • know what personal information we have about you and how we use it;
  • access a copy of it;
  • correct inaccurate information;
  • delete your information, subject to legal exceptions such as tax records;
  • opt out of the sale or sharing of your information, or its use for targeted advertising; and
  • appeal if we decline your request.

To make a request, email actlikeusbook@gmail.com with the subject “Privacy Request,” or write to us at the address below. We will verify your identity by matching the details you give against our records before we act. You may use an authorized agent, who must show proof of your permission. We respond within 45 days, as state law requires. If we deny your request, you may appeal by replying to our decision with the subject “Privacy Appeal.”

We will not treat you differently, charge you more, or give you a lower-quality service for using any of these rights.

California residents may also ask, once a year, for a list of any third parties to whom we disclosed personal information for their own direct marketing in the prior year (California’s “Shine the Light” law).

7. Emails from us

We send order and account emails as part of providing your purchase. If you sign up for updates, you can unsubscribe at any time using the link in any marketing email or by contacting us. You will still receive emails about your orders.

8. How long we keep information

We keep order and payment records for as long as tax and accounting laws require, generally up to seven years. We keep account information while your account is open, contact messages for as long as needed to respond and follow up, and analytics data for no longer than 26 months. After that, we delete or anonymize it.

9. How we protect information

We use secure (HTTPS) connections, a PCI-compliant payment processor, limited access to customer data, and regular software updates. No website is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security. If a data breach affects you, we will notify you as the law requires.

10. Children’s privacy

The Site is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child under 13 has given us information, contact us and we will delete it.

11. Visitors outside the United States

The Site is operated from the United States, and your information is stored and processed here. US privacy laws may differ from those in your country.

12. Changes to this Privacy Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The updated version takes effect when posted, and the Effective Date above will change. If we make a significant change, we will post a notice on the Site.
