Biography

A decade spent studying the rooms where decisions actually get made

Freeman Fields grew up on the South Side of Chicago, where his mother taught him the basics of business before he was old enough to understand the word “entrepreneur.” He joined the U.S. Navy in 1989 and became the youngest person on his command to lead an entire division, before a Desert Storm injury forced his medical retirement in 1997.

He spent the next two decades in construction, building a career — and later, businesses — from the ground up with no institutional head start. He’s since become a real estate investor, holds multiple patents, and founded iVault Home Protection, a veteran-owned company built around a simple idea: most systems built to protect you weren’t actually designed with you in mind, so you have to understand how they really work before you can trust them.

Act Like Us, Think Like Them is his third book. It’s the one that finally puts into words what he’s spent a lifetime figuring out by doing.

Author’s note

“I didn’t learn any of this in a classroom. I learned it in the Navy, on job sites, and building companies from nothing with no one clearing the path for me. I wrote this book because nobody sat me down and explained how the system actually works and I got tired of watching other people find out the hard way.”
